In today's reading W K write of two details that Jesus emphasises of the picture of shepherds and sheep. There is another point that spoke to me; verse 4 tells us that the shepherd goes on ahead of the sheep and the sheep follow. My notes tell me that the Palestinian shepherd led his sheep, he did not drive them. Jesus walks ahead of us and takes us into places where we might otherwise be too fearful to go, but with him leading us we can go confidently.
I was recently in Israel. As we drove along we noticed many "lines" going around all the small hills along the roadside. We were told that these are the worn paths where sheep had been led for many years. they are known as "the paths of righteousness"(see Psalm 23;3). Apparently, if you were to follow any one of these paths they would always lead you to the top of the hill!

First of all wow!Thankyou Aligd for that information it really adds to my apreciation of the parable.Thankyou.
I've found it hard to post a comment this week as in general I find Jesus' parables hard hitting and all to easy to apply to my own personal situation. So whilst they have helped me in my spritual journey this week its not really been something I've felt able to share.
Todays passage is different. Its meaning is so broad and rich. Not only does it serve the purpose of placing Jesus at the centre of salvation but it warns of false prophets and priorites too. It makes the stark statement that anyone who is not Jesus that comes to guide us,will harm us.
Its also contains 3 times Jesus stating he will die for us. And it is us as it also says "I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen". Meaning presumably Gentiles. Meaning us.
Good stuff. I'm thankful for the opportunities to study Jesus in the way WK has set up for us.

I had not thought of John 10;1-18 as a parable but Christ laying it on the line this is who I am. Which seems to give it more force as people cannot say this is a good story and ignore its spiritual message.

I suppose an illustration of the need for a good shepherd is in the mountains of Britain where the sheep run free. Many a walker following a sheep path has been led into a bog.
